Religious Freedom in Greece

The eminent Roman historian Sir Ronald Syme once remarked to me that the most important problem for the student of antiquity is that of explaining why a small country, mountainous and for the most part infertile, should within a comparatively short space of time have laid the foundations of European art and science. Any attempt at an answer to that problem requires an understanding of the advantage the Greeks derived from the hard realism of their religion.
